March Madness

by admin on April 16, 2009

March was a busy month for many of our Kids Cafe sites! There were health fairs celebrating National Nutrition month, a lady bug release, and an inspirational event celebrating a modern American hero.

At Schools #2 and #12 students held a celebration for National Nutrition month. All of the children put their heads together and made posters all about the food groups and the food guide pyramid. The students were encouraged to try healthy snacks that were available and fill out a fun health facts form while at the fair! The children did an excellent job on their posters and putting the fair together.

School #17 had a special treat this month when they came to Freshwise Farm and helped us to release lady bugs in the greenhouse. The children not only learned about the farm but also taste-tested a type of flower, called Nasturtiums.  Nasturtiums are an edible plant, and many of the children who tasted them really enjoyed the flavor.  It was a fun afternoon for all who attended and a special thanks to School #17 for their help!

The last spectacular event that happened in March was spending an incredible night with an inspirational modern American hero: Barrington Irving. Attendees of city recreation sites and others had the pleasure of hearing the youngest person and the first African American to fly solo around the world, in a plane he built himself. The night was filled with inspirational speakers, great food, and a visit from Cool Can!

It is great that the school students have had the opportunity to taste test great food like this. I have never heard of Barrington Irving–how inspirational! Good job, Foodlink!
